AI and genAI
Whimsy Grove does not tolerate generative AI. We will be hostile towards it so keep it out of this space.
Generative AI does not align with the values in this space. It is environmentally, economically and socially corrupt. The value of what it produces is not worth the cost it has on humanity and the world as a whole.
Yes, this includes ChatGPT.
Here is an incredibly comprehensive website that can tell you the impact it has in a more informative manner.
Spooky - This word, along with alternative spellings of it (like spoopy), has roots in racism. The term “spook” was co-opted by racists after the second world war, after black pilots, named Spookwaffe, returned home with the name. Here’s an article about it: link
The black community asks yearly, around Halloween, for us to use alternatives. Here are a few:
eerie
sinister
ghostly
uncanny
chilling
creepy
Terminology
Together we can learn the harm that certain words can cause, whether we realise it or not. We aren’t all perfect, so don’t beat yourself up for not knowing something, but we can learn and adapt. I hope this resource encourages that.
Crazy/Insane/Delusional - All of the above words stem back to mental illness. They all have routes in ableism and we should try our best to replace them from our vocabulary. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to provide alternatives due to the wide application and vague meanings these words have become. Try to test yourself to be more specific: is it ridiculous, hilarious or stressful? Maybe it’s something else entirely! It can be a rewarding challenge to replace these words, similarly to how, in school, many of us were taught to use more descriptive terms than the likes of “like” or “said”. Here’s an article about it: link
Bean (person)- Though it became a term of endearment, we should think twice before using the word bean to refer to others. Yet another racist term that unfortunately found its way into common conversation, even though it stems from “beaner”, a derogatory term against Hispanic people. Here’s an article about it: link
Though you should be careful with terms of endearment, as some people don’t like them without familiarity (or at all), if you do wish to use alternatives, here are a few (though don’t be afraid to be creative):
sausage
soul
lovely
flower
petal
mischief
and the list will forever continue
Pepe the Frog
Pepe is a widely known character that is seen in many emotes across Twitch. However, it has been claimed by alt-right meaning that many don’t feel safe when seeing the iconography. For this reason, we do not allow this character in my spaces.

Pronouns
When you are meeting a lot of people online in spaces like Twitch chats, it can be hard to know who uses what pronouns.
Thankfully, using BTTV, you can pair a pronoun extension to see peoples pronouns in chat using your browser (if they have selected them).
Even if you don’t have BTTV, or if you are using a different device, you can still assign your pronouns for others to see!
Please be aware that the extension can be buggy, so as always: if you are unsure, ask, never presume.
Tone Markers
As a primarily disabled community, it can be incredibly useful to use tone markers. It helps to negate any miscommunication of tone that is always tricky with written messages.
There are many to choose from, but don’t worry about learning them all straight away. Here are a few common examples from this resource that you can use yourself!
/gen - genuine
/s - sarcastic
/srs - serious
/pos - positive
/j - joking
/hj - half joking
/ref - reference
/lovingly - for after a roast that was meant in a loving manner
If you aren’t sure, or can’t remember the markers, it is equally, if not more beneficial to use the full word.
Author Blacklists
This list can and will become out of date. It is recommended that you use this list as a prompt to do further research into these authors as your moral limits will not be the same as others, and some of these authors may have redeemed themselves in your eyes. This list aims to give you the ability to make a choice easier, not make the choice for you.

Monetary Support
Some organisations that you can support: Red Crescent, PCRF, MAP, Doctors Without Borders
Operation Olive Branch is a spreadsheet full places/gofundmes etc where you can help with escape funds
Boycotts
Boycotts are some of the most effective ways to cause change. They can also save you money if a target is something that you would typically purchase. Though be aware that boycotts are most effective when they persist, don’t just take this change as a temporary alteration, you won’t make much of a difference that way. Have these boycotts inform your way of life going forwards, soon you’ll have a habit and it’ll be second nature for you to choose a different brand.
Follow the BDS Movement on what to boycott to support Palestine. Remember: imperfect activism is better than no activism, do what you can and remember to care for yourself so that you have the strength to continue to fight.
