The Fridge

Moving your fridge away from the wall slightly will allow for heat to be released effectively, enabling increased efficiency with its primary function.

Maintenance is key: Check the seals to make sure they are in working order and dust the condenser coils a couple times a year.

The Sink

Should you hand-wash or use a dishwasher? Should you rinse recyclables before putting them in the bin? Should you rinse before using the dishwasher?

Hand-washing may seem superior when looking at water waste, but if you use the eco setting, only run when full and scrape (not rinse) any waste left on what you put in it, the dishwasher will be more water efficient.

Washing any recyclables can also help out. Donโ€™t go overboard with a deep clean, but rinsing off any food waste will mean that you donโ€™t risk the whole load of recycling being sent to either landfill or an incinerator. Contaminated truck loads are immediately turned away and cause more harm than the good you would be doing saving water in not rinsing.

Cleaning Products

Cleaning products can be bad for two reasons: The containers, and what they contain. A lot of the chemicals in the cleaning products are bad for our health, with some causing chemical reactions in the wild that are long lasting and bad for the health of local nature. Some companies even test on animals.

Try making or buying natural cleaner, recipes that include white vinegar, lemon and baking soda will work great. And try to reuse the bottles you already own that contain cleaning products.

Paper Towels

Each year we go through 7.2 million tons of paper towels. It takes 17 trees and 20,000 gallons of water to make just 1 ton. This is the effect on the environment before adding the chemicals and the bleach to make them white.

Start by looking through your wardrobe for old clothes that could be turned into reusable rags, then look into buying cloths with natural fibres to avoid microplastics.

If you want to stick with paper, switch to bamboo paper. Not only is it fast growing and so highly renewable, it is also naturally antibacterial. Just make sure to choose reputable brands that ethically source it.
